Haiti has been unstable for years due to poverty, natural disasters, corruption and gang violence. In the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, many people live in food insecurity. The country is vulnerable to earthquakes and hurricanes.
In addition, there has been political unrest in the country for years. This reached a climax when large-scale gang violence broke out in Port-au-Prince in February 2024. Attacking government buildings and key institutions, including prisons, with thousands of prisoners escaping.
