The EU increasingly leaves the control of its external borders to ‘partner countries’, who receive hundreds of millions of euros in return. Morocco, for instance, keeps the border with two Spanish enclaves closed to refugees. Too often, their attempt to reach the EU costs them their life.

Sudan has been struggling with poverty, hunger, and violence for more than thirty years. The number of floods and droughts is increasing. Sudan is once again torn apart by violence, causing many Sudanese to flee.

The population of the Central African Republic suffers from the consequences of the civil war, poverty and severe malnutrition. More than half of the population depends on humanitarian aid. The UN speaks of a ‘crisis forgotten by the world’.

The people of the Democratic Republic Congo suffer from armed conflict, disease outbreaks and an increasingly serious hunger crisis. Security is further deteriorating, millions of people have fled and depend on aid.

The humanitarian needs in Ethiopia are great: the country is struggling with various conflicts, poverty, and the extreme consequences of climate change. In Ethiopia, 1 in 3 people live below the poverty line.

There is a complex and forgotten crisis in Cameroon. The population suffers from ongoing violence, food insecurity and consequences of climate change, such as prolonged drought or extreme rainfall, resulting in floods and landslides.

The people of Kenya struggle with poverty and conflict. The country is also increasingly suffering from climate change. Floods are becoming more common, while at the same time the worst drought in 40 years is affecting at least 4.5 million people.

Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world. Its people suffer from ongoing violence, poverty, and hunger. The number of hungry Malians is increasing. One in three people depend on humanitarian aid.

Niger suffers from food insecurity, poverty, floods, droughts and violence. Millions of people are hungry. Due to rising prices and increasing poverty, famine is high. Niger is facing one of the greatest humanitarian crises of our time.

Nigeria has endured decades of instability. The country struggles with poverty, extreme weather, malnutrition, and the terror of Boko Haram. Millions of people are internally displaced and face urgent needs.

The people of Somalia suffer from hunger, poverty, and ongoing conflict. Extreme droughts and floods cause major problems. It is one of the poorest and most vulnerable countries in Africa. Millions of Somalis face food insecurity.

A combination of poverty and ongoing conflict ravage the people of Chad. Climate change results in floods and drought. The country is struggling with a humanitarian crisis around Lake Chad. Recently Chad received hundreds of thousands of refugees from Sudan.

Violence flares up regularly in South Sudan. There is severe poverty and food shortage for millions of people. In addition, the country has experienced major floods for four years in a row, causing landslides and leaving many people displaced in hard-to-reach areas.

Storm Daniel led to significant damage and caused the displacement of over ten thousand people. Entire neighbourhoods in Derna disappeared, creating a catastrophic situation. 35,000 have been displaced in the affected areas.

The Mediterranean Sea remains the main route for migration to the EU. The number of arrivals in Italy increased by 130% in one year. There were almost 37,000 arrivals in the second quarter of 2023.

Refugees in Tunisia mainly come from the southern parts of Africa. According to the UN, there are 9.000 refugees in the country.

The population of Burkina Faso suffers from ongoing conflict, extreme poverty, drought and further deteriorating living conditions. Millions of people are facing acute food insecurity. The food situation is very critical in parts of the country. Increased violence has driven many people to flee their homes.

A political and deepening socio-economic crisis is causing 7 million people to leave the country. This makes Venezuela’s refugee crisis one of the largest in the world. The country faces hyperinflation and major food shortages. Every 3 out of 4 Venezuelans currently live in extreme poverty.

Most refugees arriving on Curaçao do not have a valid residence status, which means they are not entitled to access basic health care. The lack of care often leads to life-threatening situations.

In addition, the island is facing economic problems. Food aid, for the local population as well as for refugees and migrants, is a necessity.

Haiti has been unstable for years due to poverty, natural disasters, corruption and gang violence. In the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, many people live in food insecurity. The country is vulnerable to earthquakes and hurricanes.

In addition, there has been political unrest in the country for years. This reached a climax when large-scale gang violence broke out in Port-au-Prince in February 2024. Attacking government buildings and key institutions, including prisons, with thousands of prisoners escaping.
